At our August ANC membership meeting this week, Council Member Laura Morrison explained the process the city will use to select 100 non-profit and public organizations to receive Google Fiber for free for 10 years. The Community Connections site selection application deadline is September 30, 2013, and the application and program details are available at http://austintexas.gov/digitalinclusion.  Gerardo Interiano, Head of Google Community Affairs, described what gigabit speed provides, the general deployment schedule and tasks, and how residents can sign up at https://fiber.google.com/cities/austin/ to keep up to date on the latest Google Fiber news. Look for Google to visit the ANC again when there are details about Fiberhoods.
After learning from Brian Rogers at our July meeting about the options that City Council will soon be asked to choose from for recuperating the cost of infrastructure required for new development, Sector Representatives Jason Meeker and Tom Nuckols collaborated to draft an ANC resolution that supports a position of having growth pay for itself. Please review the draft resolution with your NA/HOA board members and residents and provide comments to the email address provided on the draft resolution. The membership also approved, with minor wording changes, the draft ANC resolution regarding aerial advertising–the final version of that resolution will be posted soon to the ANC website.

This month we heard from consumer advocate Bill Oakey about policies and issues affecting the affordability of Austin, and he has started a new blog, AustinAffordability.com, to continue a community discussion.  Robert Thomas, of the ANC 10-One Subcommittee, provided an update of the Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission activity and explained the need for the ANC to develop a reliable map of Austin neighborhoods.  We also introduced Jess Weitzel, who will be helping the ANC as a GIS Intern to update our sector map and develop the neighborhoods map.
