As noted in an earlier edition of the newsletter, NACA is participating in the Austin Community Trees Neighborhood Program (ACTNP). The goal of the program is to increase the tree canopy in Austin by adding native or adapted trees to yards in NACA. Organizers would like to add approximately 1000 trees that will add shade to yards and sidewalks in our area. To make this program a success, many hands will be needed. There are three ways in which you can help.
On September 27 many volunteers are needed to walk the neighborhoods and put a door hanger with information about the program at each residence. Walkers will go out in pairs and cover a specific route. On November 8 walkers will again go out; this time only to dwellings where the residents indicated they wanted one or more trees. This time the walkers will put flags in yards indicating where trees should be planted and provide door hangers with information about how to prepare for the trees. On November 14 people will be needed to help unload and sort the trees for delivery on November 15. Finally on November 15 help will be needed in delivering the trees.
The first two events will start from the Settlement Home property on Colony Creek. The site for the tree sorting and loading is still being determined.
If you cannot be a walker you can help by providing bottled water and snacks (fruit, granola bars and similar) either as an individual or as a business.
