Program: Coping with the Holiday Blues; Speaker: Dr.Kathy Sheley
Dr. Sheley discussed light therapy and seasonal effective syndrome. Go to Google.com to find out affordable items for light therapy.
She discussed dealing with guests visiting for Thanksgiving. It is not unusual to deal with relatives with problems with neglect or physical or sexual abuse. If you know a relative that are severely depressed, there are therapists located at Seton Northwest located off of Research Blvd.
Determine your tolerance level for people that you are visiting. Most of the time visitors or relatives don’t get angry when they know what to expect and if you let them know what you will be doing.
Hosting a small family gathering or having a Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner at a restaurant is a good idea.
Flexibility with relatives is vital. Most people appreciate one on one time with another with similar interests. Do not put pressure on other people to do what they do not want to do.
Plan on periods of relaxation in between shopping, parties, cleaning house, visiting relatives etc.
Be gracious if others give you gifts when you did not get them one. Do not rush out and get them a gift.
Ideally, everyone should have their own vehicle if they want to go do something they want to do.
Try to come up with unique gifts for relatives.
Next Meeting: January 17th. Election of Officers and Approval of Budget and a discussion of a new development off of Jamestown.
Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 8:30pm
