D4 Community Input on Public Safety
We have worked hard to address some critical public safety needs in District 4 with a breadth of initiatives—including changing our public safety plan for South By Southwest season to ensure our officers are not pulled away from our neighborhoods for downtown, modernizing our technology so that police officers can spend time in our communities instead of on the side of the road managing tow truck services, investing resources to transform vacant lots with high crime rates into safer public park space for neighbors to enjoy, and giving folks with conviction histories a second chance at employment to reduce the chance of reoffending and reincarceration.
But there’s much more to do. We hear from our police department that an expanded community policing program is critical for the safety of our neighborhoods. Which is why last year during the City budget process, Council Member Ann Kitchen and Greg Casar worked to dedicate funding for an independent review of the way that we do policing in Austin, with a particular focus on community policing and community engagement. Matrix Consulting has been hired to conduct this study, and they are asking for your input to help them evaluate the current services provided by the Austin Police Department. Matrix will use your feedback to assist the Austin Police Department make improvements in community engagement and police work in District 4.  Please take the survey by May 13th.
