Hello all! The North Austin Civic Association needs more members like you! We currently only have 129 members, as compared to last year where when had 156. Both of these numbers are really low considering the fact that the neighborhood association has over 30,000 residents. Imagine what we could do if more people pitched in.
This year, the North Austin Civic Association is organizing for the Austin Community Tree program, awarded by the City of Austin and Austin Energy, to give away free 5 gallon trees to all residential, business, and civic properties in the neighborhood association. This includes block-walking the neighborhood on September 27th and November 8th, organizing roughly 150 volunteers, requesting food donations, receiving 1000 trees from the tree nursery on Nov. 14th, distributing them all on Nov. 15th, and even helping to plant them.
Also this year, the North Austin Civic Association is helping to plan the November candidate forum on behalf of all neighborhoods in District 4. This includes costs for translation services, location fees, and printing yard signs and fliers. The planning for the candidate forum takes a lot of volunteer time. I will post more information about the candidate forum soon.
Also, we applied for the Love Your Block, Austin! grant, and will be receiving free crime watch signs with the stipulation that the community come together to learn crime watch tools. We will focus on using Nextdoor as a communication tool for your crime watches. Some grants (physical/park improvements) require that we match funds, so it is really important that we at least have members’ financial support.
The neighborhood association also participates in the Restore Rundberg Initiative, APD Commander’s forums, Austin Neighborhoods Council, monthly street clean-ups, voter registration, manages a website and facebook, and has monthly meetings as the YMCA (which the neighborhood association brought to the neighborhood).
So please please, support the neighborhood association, and ask your neighbors to join as well. We are always looking for new leadership. See the website for information on how to join!
Best, Melinda Schiera
