At the neighborhood association meeting last night, members agreed to vote on a motion at the next meeting in January. You will need to be a current member to vote on behalf of the neighborhood association, and be present at the next meeting in January.
We will vote on a motion to approve the letter opposing Senate Bill 4 presented by Brian La Cour on behalf of the neighborhood association, and send to Texas State Senators Charles Perry and Kirk Watson, incoming Travis County Sheriff Sally Hernandez, and possible others.
Read the bill:  Senate Bill 4
In the news: http://www.mystatesman.com/news/news/sanctuary-city-bill-filed-as-senate-priority/ns8d6/
The text of the proposed letter is as follows:
To Whom It May Concern:
Law enforcement officials have long recognized the importance of trust between municipal police and the local immigrant population. Recently, the Texas senator Charles Perry (R-Lubbock) has filed a bill (Senate Bill 4) that threatens to compromise that trust by requiring local law enforcement officials to cooperate with the federal government, particularly the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, to assist in the enforcement of federal immigration laws.
The North Austin Civic Associate (NACA) is home to a large immigrant population and would be directly affected by this bill. We believe that passage and enforcement of this bill would have an adverse impact on the safety and well-being of our community, degrading trust with local law enforcement and putting all members of our community at greater risk. With these thoughts in mind, we therefore strongly encourage you to oppose Senate Bill 4.
(to be signed by the president of NACA on behalf of the neighborhood association)
