PUBLIC MONTHLY MEETING – DRAFT MINUTES – MAY 20TH 2023
Board Members present: President, Jared Noble; Vice-President, Jennifer Smith-Gonnabathula; Treasurer, Brian LaCour; Secretary, Missy Haworth
Not present: Randy Teich, Co-President
Minutes: for April 20, 2023 approved by unanimous vote
Secretary’s Report: The draft Minutes for April were approved unanimously and will be posted on the NACA website.
Treasurer’s Report: Membership goal has been exceeded. The Block Walk Membership Drive promoted NACA and increased renewals and new memberships.
President Report: Jared reviewed the letter he will send from NACA to transportation authorities (Voted at April meeting to officially support of one of the light rail options)
Vice President’s Report: Jennifer presented an overview of how the flooding of April 20th destroyed property and disrupted residents’ health and safety. She invited Councilmember Chito Vela to share his perspective and to hear from residents. CM Vela presented actions the City is taking and expects a report from the City Manager soon.
Recognition: Allison Scharf was presented with a “Gilded Grabber” award by NACA and a certificate and gifts from Keep Austin Beautiful in recognition of her leadership NACA’s “Clean Streets” program for 7 years.
Mearns Meadow and Little Walnut Creek Flooding
Jennifer and Jared facilitated a discussion: Flood victims reported difficulties to get relief from home insurance and FEMA. NACA residents explained that poor management of the creeks was the cause of this preventable flood event.
Action Items:
Councilmember Vela: Will share the City Manager’s Report, Check the contracts/instructions for creek management, seek relief funding for dislocated residents, advocate during Budget Meetings to increase creek management resources, check if there are funds from development upstream available
NACA Board: Will disseminate City Manager’s report and other City communications as they become available
Residents were asked to:Respond to the City Manager’s report, Attend City Council meetings, Call 311, Report data to Vela’s Office
